Today, the flight deck of a commercial airliner is commanded by a pilot who manages a sophisticated computer system to plot the flight course and fly the aircraft. However, these pilots are still schooled in the basics of flight training. This activity guide will take you through the calculations and considerations that a pilot must make when planning a flight in a small plane. You will learn to plan a flight using visual flight rules (VFR) and use a weight and balance sheet to calculate the balance envelope of a small plane, an important consideration that determines whether the aircraft will stay airborne safely. You will also have the opportunity to try out flight simulation software.
